Breakfast Cereals

Sugar is one of the most popular hidden ingredient consumed everyday it is present in all packaged food such as ready made dishes, cereals, pasta sauces, salad dressings, chips and many other recipes. We consume 18 pieces of sugar per day along with twice the daily recommendation for salt.

Cereals are in every kids or adults breakfast menu.Cereals contain an average of 11 g of sugar per 30 g of cereals.

Cereals were initially created for people suffering from bad eating habits. It was considered a detox meal made from corn flour with no sugar added to help them get in shape and lose weight. Sugar was then added in order to change the initial recipe and boost cereal sales.Sugar became the first target in the recipe rather than the grain itself, leading to high rates of tooth decay in children along with many cases of diabetes in adults.Nutritionists payed close attention to the similarity between candies and cereals.

Honey was then introduced as a replacement to sugar, however honey had the same impact on tooth decay and obesity.Sugar stimulates the pleasure center of the brain which then activates the addiction mechanism in the brain.

Scientists even discovered that rats can be more addicted to sugar than cocaine.

Media is trying to influence people in choosing diet or low fat cereal varieties when the only solution is to opt for fresh grains or bran varieties which has a higher glycemic index and fiber content.
