Introducing solid foods to your baby
In order to make sure your baby stays healthy it is advised to breastfeed till 6 month of age. Introducing solid foods is a big step in your baby’s life,no need to rush remember that it has to be done gradually as it is the first step towards introducing him to a healthy lifestyle.
When you find that your baby is ready for solid foods, start with fresh food such as avocado, sweet potato, banana or pear.
You should introduce one food at a time and wait a minimum of 2 to 4 days before trying other varieties. After each new food ,pay close attention to any allergic reactions such as diarrhea, rash,or vomiting. If any of these occur stop using the new food and consult your child’s pediatrician.
After a few month of starting solid foods ,it is advised to offer your baby a balanced diet such as :
Breast milk and/or formula
Meats
Cereals
Vegetables
Fruits
Eggs and fish (1 year)
Yogurt (at 7-8 month)
WHO recommends that infants should receive complementary foods at 6 months of age in addition to breast milk, initially 2-3 times a day between 6-8 months, increasing to 3-4 times daily between 9-11 months and 12-24 months with additional nutritious snacks 1-2 times per day.
Food should be prepared hygienically by cleaning veggies and fruits thoroughly and hand washing before handling food.Food should be stored for a short period of time.
Introducing allergens (wheat, milk, eggs, fish and nuts) is recommended at the age of 1 years however you should always consult your doctor before doing so.
