Porridge

Porridge is one of the best breakfast idea as it will curb your hunger for the next meal and let you feel full longer than any other meal. Oat bran is good for the heart , it is high in fiber and can lower fat content. I usually mix it with soy milk, honey ,dried cranberries and walnuts for a heart healthy breakfast.

Shellfish

Shellfish are loaded with vitamins and minerals like selenium, vitamin B12, niacin, iron and zinc. The selenium is an antioxidant that helps your skin stay healthy and vitamin B12 reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

As long as you don t have any allergies enjoy a nice plate of shellfish which is filling and low in fat.

Stay away from fried and breaded varieties as they cancel the health properties of shellfish because of deep frying which makes them high in saturated fat.

Health benefits of tomatoes

Tomatoes are present is most of the dishes we consume it has a lot of healthy properties. Lycopene is a very popular antioxidant, it is a carotenoid found in tomatoes that has anticancer properties. High level of carotenoids in your body indicates good health as they detox your body from harmful free radicals.

According to scientific studies, the increase of lycopene in your diet helps against oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol) thus lowering the risk for cardiovascular diseases. A cup of tomato juice or 3 to 4 tablespoons of tomato paste consumed daily will do the fix.

Tomatoes are also rich in vitamin C and E and the antioxidant flavonol which coupled with lycopene act to optimize health status by lowering toxins in the body. Lycopene is better absorbed when tomatoes are cooked however favor homemade tomato soups as canned soups and ketchup contain high level of sodium that can cause hypertension if not monitored properly. Lycopene is also found in berries, beets, papaya and red peppers mainly in red colored foods.

Tarte tatin

I have always had mixed feelings regarding tarte Tatin as it can sometimes be heavy depending on the amount of filo pastry used to prepare it.It is always good to share deserts or skip the filo pastry because it is high in salt and butter.

The best option is to boil apples and sprinkle some cinnamon on top as they become sweet after you boil them and no longer need an additional amount of sugar.

Decaf or regular?

Coffee has a lot of health benefits ,including antioxidants . The higher the quality of beans the more the benefits. Decaffeinated beans undergo some chemical reactions that makes the bean less nutritious.

2-3 cups of coffee are the recommended dose of coffee per day, if you drink more and are trying to lower your intake or quit for some reason switching to decaf can help you gradually decrease your daily caffeine.

Coffee has zero calorie but adding whipped cream or caramel such as the varieties available at Starbucks can curb your diet. The best choice is tall cappuccino and latte drinks which are low in fat and calories.
