Basil cucumber mocktail

I am not a big fan of alcoholic beverages so that makes me a big fan of mocktails.

Mocktails are cocktails free of alcohol however they can be full of sugar syrup which is why i always chose the fresh variety which is basically a juice mix.

that specific mocktail is made of soda ,cucumber juice with basil and lime juice.

Chose your candies wisely

Candies can be in the hard, jelly or soft form depending on their ingredient list which is mainly sugar, gelatin and citric acid. All ingredients are heated ,then colorings are added.Sugar coating is an important step for the flavor, some coating are more acidic than others depending on the brand.

Gelatin comes from animal sources such as cow ,pork ,fish or algae .Industrials usually use pork gelatin because it is the least expensive. Some colorings are natural such as carbon, turmerics and beetroot however if those colors are exposed to light they can easily fade.

Gelatin has some health benefits it regulates the body articulation mechanism however the compounds added to produce it may harm us.

Candies were once used as medication by coating the herbal medicines with sugar and were then administered to patients.

The best varieties are the organic ones with natural colorings and ingredients.

Salt in your diet

Have you ever thought that salt is present everywhere and that it is not only in the form of table salt.

All packaged food ,pickles, olives, cheese ,cured meat are packed with high level of sodium. Learning to read food labels will help you identify which foods are too high in salt. Increased blood pressure have been a leading cause for strokes. A normal individual should consume up to 2.4 g of salts per day and it is getting to 3.4 g and higher.

1.5 g/day is the optimum amount for good health.

Salt is used as a taste enhancer and as a preservative ,that is why the industrials are using huge amount of salt in their food to keep people addicted to their meals.

Tips for reading food labels:

Sodium free: <5 mg/serving

Very low sodium :<35 mg/serving

Low sodium :<140 mg/serving

Reduced sodium: 25 % less than the usual amount of sodium

Light in sodium :50 % less than the usual amount of sodium.

food and drug interaction

Some drugs taken with a specific type of food can cause side effects that is why i chose to talk about that subject to familiarize people with that issue.

Some antibiotics should be taken separately from calcium, magnesium and iron supplementation or even apart from yogurt, milk and eggs. It is advisable to always read medication labels.

Some antidepressant drugs should be taken apart from beer, wine, soy, beans and cheese.

Iron supplements are best taken on an empty stomach but that might cause discomfort so take your pills without seeds, rice, beans, fibers, tea, coffee ,dairy products, eggs and apart from calcium, zinc ,copper and magnesium supplements as it might lower the absorption of iron in the intestine.

Avoid grapefruit when taking cholesterol lowering drugs such as zocor, lipitor and norvasc.

Food pairing

Pairing food to increase nutrition density of meals is a thing you will learn to master with experience and a thorough understanding of micronutrients interaction in the body. Let us put it that way, some vitamins and minerals are not easily absorbed in the body due to some competition that happens at the receptor doors between molecules that resemble each other such as calcium, magnesium ,iron and zinc.

Eating vegetables with fat allows a better absorption of beta carotene,an antioxidants found in most colored veggies which is a precursor of vitamin A.For vegetarian ,eating tofu with bell pepper which is also loaded with vitamin C does the trick.

Iron absorption for example is increased when ingesting vitamin C rich foods such as citrus fruits and broccoli.

Adding garlic and onion to whole grains makes zinc and iron absorption more bioavailable.

Vitamin D is important for calcium absorption in the body so pairing calcium rich food with vitamin D is essential ex:kale and fatty fish.

Avocado fat will also enhance the carotenoid absorption in tomatoes,so avocado and tomato salad is a good choice.

peanut butter and banana is a very good choice for a post workout treat as it is perfect for muscle recovery.

Turmeric and bell pepper also have mood enhancing properties as piperine found in pepper pairs with turmeric to boost your mood.
