Bread in restaurants
I am literally in love with bread;baguette,wholewheat,whole grain,sesame,walnut and much more varieties.I always questioned myself on the purpose of bread in restaurants.As I read some articles on that topic ,I found out that it is actually in relation to old habits in taverns where people use to have one meal per day at a fixed price and had to fill up with bread. Another plausible explanation was that the bread basket is here to keep people busy while waiting for their meal and also as a welcome gesture to customers.
French restaurants are the best when it comes to bread.You should make sure to eat it in moderation because it will end up adding empty calories to your meal. Try not to obsess with bread consumption to the point where you feel extremely guilty when you have some. Two pieces of bread with a little olive oil is okay,as long as you do not eat pasta or pizza as a main meal.If it is the case you can then share your main meal or skip the bread basket.
The healthiest bread choices are wholewheat or whole grain bread varieties.They are high in fiber and have a low glycemic index which will not raise your insulin level after consumption so you won’t feel hungry right away.
